The Met Gala totally brings out our inner Miranda Priestly every year and this year was no exception! Take a seat as we dish the goods on this years red carpet … from fashion fails to Rihanna (who else) hitting it out of the part theme-wise.
The theme for this years Met Gala was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”. We see some excellent interpretations and we see some fails…
Firstly we see the predominant use of crosses to represent Catholicism … groundbreaking. 🙀 Although we see some subtle use of the crosses e.g. Miley Cyrus’ show and Trevor Noah’s Chic Suit, the cross seems to be the most iconic in this collection.
Next we see the use of the reverend collar to create an allusion towards christianity. Fashionistas like Anna Wintour, Jennifer Lopez and Kris Jenner have incorporated the Reverend Collar to pay homage to the Christianity theme – do we love it? Hmmm … not sure.
And there were the head-dresses. From Rihanna going full on Pope to Blake Lively’s subtle halo-esque ornamentation, we see that the head-dress was recurrently used accessory.
There were some stars that owned the theme without the literal interpretations. Zendaya’s stylized crusader, Jared Leto’s ensemble and the use of printed fabric, mimicking the great mosaics of the Christian tradition were the most innovative and stylish ways to be depict the theme this year at the Met Gala.
We’d just like to take a moment to appreciate Blake Lively, Amal Clooney and Gigi Hadid looking flawless and on point as usual!
Then we have the fails this year, Katy Perry’s arch angel ensemble seems a tad bit too literal and unflattering….
Then we see that some people just didn’t get the memo about the theme, or just chose to completely ignore it
And of course there was the Bollywood contigent with both Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra amongst the attendees of the gala. Priyanka was bang on theme in a Ralph Lauren sheath and gothic headdress but Deepika opted for a Jessica Rabbit-esque look when everyone else was going Disney Villain.
Lastly, we have Lena Waithe, slaying with the rainbow coat, throwing shade at the theme.
