Events in Karachi: 4th-10th March 2016

Quite a few fun events in Karachi coming this week. The festival fever continues with the Karachi Tea Festival being held at Frere Hall over the weekend. The festival will feature a variety of brands and stalls selling exotic teas and tea-related products. If you’re a tea addict, this can be a fun way to discover the heritage of tea in Pakistan while enjoying your daily caffeine fix! The Citizens Archive of Pakistan is holding their annual children’s carnival. The carnival will feature fun games, yummy food and crafts for sale, while raising money for CAP’s Living History Museum project.

As always, there are multiple musical events to look forward to in the coming week. Musician extraordinaire Meekal Hasan and band will be performing with Sounds of Kolachi. Sounds of Kolachi has been making waves with their eclectic sound and Meekal Hasan’s talent has long been recognised as being remarkable. The concert promises to be a treat for lovers of fusion music! If you’re in the mood for more traditional melodies, the legendary Amjad Sabri will be performing in the coming week as well.

Girl Greek Dinner is coming to Karachi for the first time. The evening aims to bring together women who are passionate about science, art and maths. It’s a great chance to socialise with like-minded people and make new friends! Ajoka Theatre is putting on a play inspired by letters exchanged between the late and great poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz and his wife Alys Faiz. The play is a dramatisation of letters exchanged between the couple while Faiz was in prison and is an intimate look into the relationship between them.

Rozan-e-Zindan Se

Ajoka Theatre, plays in Karachi, theatre in Karachi, events in Karachi

Ajoka Theatre Pakistan in collaboration with The Arts Council presents Rozan-e-Zindan Se, a play based on the letters of Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Alys Faiz. Faiz was a man of few words and modest to the extreme. His prison correspondence with his beloved wife and comrade Alys is however an exception.

These letters, published in Urdu as “Saleebain Merry Dareechay Mein”, give us invaluable information about the emotional and social context of some of Faiz’s most poignant and powerful poems. In his letters, Faiz declares his affection for Alys and their daughters, reminisces about the gardens, the birds, the seasons with great passion. equally significant and fascinating are letters which Alys wrote to Faiz during this period. Published as “Dear Heart”, these letters reveal Alys as a woman of great fortitude and commitment.

The shows are free for all.
