Events in Karachi: 18th-24th March 2016

It’s a happening week, with quite a few fun events in Karachi to look forward to. If you’re a fan of theatre, you’ll be spoilt for choice in the coming week, with three new plays opening in the city. Sandy and The Pink Ladies are back with Made For Stage Productions’s second instalment of Grease The Musical, directed once again by the talented Nida Butt. The production boasts a cast of talented, young performers and is sure to be a fun, musical ride for audiences.

Thespianz Theatre is a relatively smaller production house. They will be staging Marriage Carriage, an original play written by Faraz Zubair. The comedy revolves around a father’s search for a husband that is suitable for his young daughter, a search that comes down to each man’s ability to speak English! The play is a comedic reflection on the value attached to English in our society.

If you’re in the mood for something more serious, Stage Nomad will be staging Swadesh Deepak’s renowned Court Martial. The play follows court proceedings in the trial of a low-ranking soldier who is facing capital punishment for shooting a senior officer. Court Martial is a very well-written contemplation on the consequences of class differences in modern-day society and with Sunil Shanker directing, this production looks promising!

The city’s weekly round of musical performances includes a three-day ‘Mystical Journey’ at Aga Khan Gymkhana. The three-part qawaali event will feature renowned Sufi singers including the Sabri Brothers, Farid Ayaz and Abu Mohammad, and Akhtar Chanal. If you’re looking for something more contemporary, Undercover is back with a 4th All-Star Musical Performance. The concert will feature new songs by the band and will include performances by Omran Shafique, Sikander Mufti and Emaad Madani.

Grease The Musical

Grease, Made for Stage Productions, Nida Butt, events in Karachi, theatre in Karachi

Made For Stage Productions is back once again with their production of the classic Grease musical.

Directed, Produced and Choreographed by Nida Butt
Co-directed by Faraz Lodhi
Music Directed by Hamza Jafri

Synopsis:
It’s 1959, and Rydell High School’s senior class is in rare form. The too-cool-for-school “Burger Palace Boys” are stealing hub-caps and acting tough and their gum-snapping, chain-smoking “Pink Ladies” are looking hot in bobby sox and pedal pushers. The 1950s high school dream is about to explode in this rollicking musical that is both a homage to the idealism of the fifties and a satire of high schoolers’ age-old desire to be provocative and rebellious. At the heart of the story is the romance between hot-roding leader of the greaser gang “T-Birds” of Rydell High, Danny Zuko and the sweet goody goody new girl in town, Sandy Dumbrowski. They had a secret romance in summer thinking they’ll never meet again. But as luck would have it, Sandy’s family decides to stay on in America and she ends up going to the same school as Danny Zuko. Now back in the context of school, peer-pressure and cliques make their love a bit more complicated. Can Danny maintain his cool dude status and still get make demure Sandy his girl? The whole gang sings and dances around Danny and Sandy’s romance, through such hit songs as “Summer Nights”, “Greased Lightnin'”, “We Go Together”, and “Mooning”, recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation. Starting off with an eight-year Broadway run, Grease is among the world’s most popular musicals and has a cult-like following, especially among teens!
