Events in Karachi 22nd-29th July

Be prepared for another exciting week of events that is sure to leave you entertained. Visit T2F if you’re a film/art/improv comedy enthusiast as you can catch events related to these through out the week. Also, Frere Hall is the place to be this week where a pop-up performance and a dhaba will be arranged by Spoken Stage in collaboration with the popular group ‘Girls at Dhabas’. Be a part of Karachi Reader’s Club Meet-up where readers of the book “The Noise of Time” by Julian Barnes will discuss the book in detail. If you want to learn about self-defense, a free trial class is being arranged at Health Act fitness center and Habib University will be hosting a session on scientist-activist Abdus Salam and his contributions to physics. 1. Screening of Mabel aur Mein

A film based on the short essay, Mabel Aur Mein written by one of the most proficient names in Urdu Literature, Patras Bukhari.

The film is about a man reminiscing his old days in college where he meets Mabel, a young and confident girl. Soon their story takes a turn as underlying their friendship is an unspoken fierce competitiveness to best one another and emerge as the intellectually superior individual.

The film features music by Shajie, Ali Suhail, Nawksh, The Tamaashbeens, Mole and Asfandyar Khan.

* The Lums Media Arts Society aims to promote amateur film production in Pakistan. With its successful home production of the Flagship Film 2016- Mabel Aur Mein, it also aims to promote Urdu literature, upcoming Pakistani talent in indie music and a stimulus for understanding gender competitiveness.

2. Sumaiya Jillani’s Summer Atelier

In an age where artistic innovation has been increasingly digitised, the atelier seems to be a thing of the past. Yet one artist, whom the Huffington Post calls ‘the boldest voice in Pakistan’s art scene’, has stayed true to the veritable spirit of fine arts.

Join us as artist extraordinaire Summaiya Jillani transforms T2F’s very own Faraar Gallery into a mini summer atelier, which will house a one-month drawing and painting workshop. 3. Ali Suhail and Stupid Happiness Theory

No stranger to T2F and the Indie scene, Ali Suhail is a singer-songwriter from Karachi. Apart from his solo act, Ali also plays for Jumbo Jutt, Sikandar Ka Mandar and Natasha Humera Ejaz.

4. Pop-up in the Park

FRERE HALL EVENT

Spoken Stage in collaboration with Girls at Dhabas brings you a pop-up performance of poetry and music at Frere Hall.

Come create art in public spaces. Bring poems and songs (in any language), paints, games— anything you can share with others. Let’s claim our right to public spaces, and the city.

Pop dhaba will be serving chai through out.

5. Karachi Readers’ Club Meet

The DWL Readers’ Club is going to be discussing the book, The Noise of Time, by the award winning author, Julian Barnes.

This novel is on the life and tragedy of the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich in Soviet Union under the iron rule of Stalin. It is not just a fascinating account of the composer but also explores the meaning and place of art in society.

6. General Specifics – A Four Person Improv Show

Tens of thousands of characters, stories and narratives with just four people on stage. General Specifics, is an hour long 4 person show with music, madness and improv at the speed of life. The show will have elements of comedy, drama, movement and absolute silliness.

Come join Ayesha Tariq, Babar Jafree, Hassaan Bin Shaheen and Sohaib Ali Khan as they create magic happen in 60 minutes, all improvised.

The show will be pure long-form improv practiced by practitioners and lovers of improv all over the world. Come see some Chicago-style comedy in Karachi.

7. Self Defense – Trial Class

Self defense class

A self defense trial class is being organized covering the key components including learning of the proper mindset of being in a stressful confrontation, successful physical tactics like striking vital points and the importance of being aware of your surroundings.

Trainer: Amir Khan, a former Security Law Enforcement personnel with over a decade of experience in the Security Industry (local and international). Amir has taught the fundamentals of self defense to various professionals from former SSG security staff at Aga Khan University Hospital to female teaching staff of Zindagi Trust.

8. Symmetries: From Abdus Salam’s Universe to Quantum Information Tech

Abdus Salam was both an outstanding scientist and an influential scientist-activist whose disparate interests and activities were underpinned by a principle of unification. The speaker, Professor Barry Sanders will discuss Salam’s contributions to physics as well as to science in developing countries. Professor Sanders will also talk about his interaction with Salam and his influence on his work in quantum information science, especially symmetries and conservation in nature. Quantum technology is now on the verge of creating and exploiting the symmetries that not long ago were only found in atoms and nuclei, and this technological prowess will present applications to paradigm-shifting quantum computing. The speaker will discuss opportunities for Pakistan to build a strong activity in quantum information science.

9. Book Launch: Summers under The Tamarind Tree

BOOK LAUNCH

Summers Under The Tamarind Tree is a contemporary Pakistani cookbook celebrating the varied, exciting and often-overlooked cuisine of a beautiful country. In it, former City lawyer turned food writer and cookery teacher Sumayya Usmani captures the rich and aromatic pleasure of Pakistani cooking through more than 100 recipes. She also celebrates the heritage and traditions of her home country and looks back on a happy childhood spent in the kitchen with her grandmother and mother.
