Interior Design: A haven for a young family in Karachi

A well designed home is a haven and there are some fabulous designers in Karachi providing bespoke interior design services. Our new series on interior design looks at beautiful design projects around town for inspiration.

To be given a free reign is any Interior Designers dream and Tanya Karim Design Consultancy was lucky enough to be entrusted by Zainab and Faisal to create a haven for this young couple and their two daughters. The clients had recently moved back to Pakistan after spending considerable time in the Middle East. Settling into their old room at the family home was proving difficult space-wise, considering that they now had a toddler and another baby on the way. Therefore they decided to make some additions in their portion on the first floor of the house.

The airy living room incorporates a modern little kitchenette and is cosy fusion of east and west

THE DESIGN BRIEF:

The requirements given by the clients were simple and to the point, to accommodate the various collections of furniture, lights, paintings, decorations and tiles which they had lovingly collected during their numerous trips abroad AND to provide Zainab with ample closet space!! The rest was left to the designer to interpret their wishes to reality.

INSPIRATION:

The theme of the house was inspired by the colours and richness of Turkish streets and alleys. Both the designer and the client had fond memories of trips to Turkey and were inspired by the unique mix of Eastern & Western cultures! The client’s  myriad artifacts could be appropriately adjusted into this theme and depicted their wanderlust. The Turkish tiles used in  the staircase risers set the tone for what to expect as one entered the clients domain.

WORKING WITH LIMITED SPACE

The main challenge, no doubt, was the adjustment of extensive practical space requirements ,into the limited area available. The walk-in wardrobe meeting  the clients expectation was an achievement ! In the Nursery ,the use of light coloured flooring  and walls gave a sense of space to the otherwise small room while the pop of colour gave an energetic feel for the young ones play area. The bathrooms were modeled on modern lines keeping in mind utility and easy maintenance. The Turkish handpainted ceramic basin is the highlight of the powder room.

FAVOURITE SPOT:

The favorite spot in the house is no doubt the small balcony created as an inward looking space ,bringing  in a pleasant view, fresh air and sunlight filtered through the geometric patterned grill and topped off with the colourful Turkish Floor tiles.

The Bedroom , Living room and kitchenette all look into this space, a breathtaking burst of colour instead of what would have been a view on to the blank walls of the adjacent house!

This beautiful  home strikes a perfect balance of East and West, old and new. It is not only a reflection of the homeowners’ passion for travel as well as their love of bringing home a part of where they have been to, but it is also an ideal example of how important it is to have a relationship of trust between the Client and the Designer to bring about the best in Design !
