Desserts that are worth the calories

“You can’t buy happiness but you can buy dessert..and that’s kind of the same thing”

If you’re the sort of person that checks out the desserts on a menu first, this article is for you – a quick guide to the best desserts in Karachi. There’s nothing worse than ordering a dessert that just isn’t worth the calories but you won’t regret giving in to your sweet tooth if you order any of these goodies – let the gluttony begin!

(Editor’s note: Just for the record, we’re not even considering local sweets and mithai here – there are loads of places for great falooda, divine kulfi and stellar barfi but that’s a post for another day. Here we’re talking mainly continental desserts. )

1. Molten Lava Cake at Pompeii

Perfect for those who have a love affair with dark chocolate. The all-time favourite chocolate lava cake is available at many different restaurants with slight variations but I would suggest you try the one at Pompei. It has a soft texture and an extra dark chocolate creamy sauce oozing out of it; a true chocoholic’s delight.

2.  Flourless Almond and Coconut cake at Cote Rotie

This is probably one of the best desserts at Cote Rotie. This cake is made using pure Almond and coconut flour which means its gluten free and ideal for anyone who has been looking for a healthier cheat meal. It is light with a moist texture and a unique, more-ish taste.

3. Strawberry and Kiwi Tart at Marigold and Honey

One of the city’s best kept secrets, Marigold and Honey café is home to some of the finest desserts in town. Their fruit tarts are notable among their stellar desserts. The tarts are freshly baked and served on a tender crust made from almond flour, covered in a rich creme patisserie and served with juicy seasonal fruits.

The Flo mousse .You can never go wrong with this intense slab of chocolate, so decadent and sinful that it’s worth every bite. The rich soufflé-like texture melts in your mouth with a heavenly bittersweet aftertaste – certain to leave you craving for more. Flo’s profiteroles are also divine but their mousse is my favourite chocolate dessert.

5. Crème brulee at Okra

6. Strawberry cheesecake at Xanders

7. Tiramisu at Marigold and Honey

Finding the right tiramisu can be a quest; try the one at Marigold and Honey. The sponge is soaked in rich coffee and topped with a great mascarpone cheese cream, white chocolate ganache and roasted hazelnuts. The fluffy texture with the intense flavor makes it a totally-worth-the-calories kind of a dessert.

Originally an old-fashioned British dessert, this one is quite popular in Karachi. Luckily there are few places which do it well. Try the one at Pompei or at Aylanto. The bread pudding at Pompei is rich and soaked in a thick caramel sauce and served with vanilla icecream on the side which adds the right amount of decadent richness. The bread pudding at Ayalnto is perfect for a dessert duo. It has a hearty portion of the croissants dipped in layers of melted caramel sauce, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
