Lux Style Awards 2016 – did the best people win?

Pakistani Celebrities and the who’s who of our fashion world turned out for the 15th Lux Style Awards this weekend. Every year the LSAs dole out awards to the fashion and entertainment industries and every year there are accusations of favoritism and partisanship. Still, Lux remains the most coveted and credible Pakistani award.  So how did fashion fare in this year’s LSAs?

For the most part, I would have picked the same winners. Hasnain and Fouzia have had great years as models and are both versatile in shoots and striking on the ramp. Nabila continues to lead the pack in terms of hair and makeup, with a record 10th win. She’s announced she will no longer be submitting her portfolio for the LSAs and will take a mentoring role instead. People have questioned her winning streak but anyone who ever sees her portfolios knows why she has won so many times – no one else in the industry has the same flair, vision or consistency.

Luxury Pret was a hotly contested category but Shamaeel had an excellent 2015, with her new Karachi flagship store and regular sellout exhibitions in Lahore. Her signature style is opulent but wearable and her range had depth in terms of silhouette. Amir Adnan was the undoubted leader in terms of menswear while Alee Hassan was a great choice for best emerging talent. Faraz Manan’s bridal prize was well deserved – he showed some real innovation in terms of cut and his swarovski-encrusted creations won him fans both locally and abroad. His Lawn award was more controversial. I’m not a fan of Crescent lawn though Kareena of course looks fabulous in anything she wears. Crescent have improved their quality over recent years but the award is for lawn design rather than lawn quality. I found nothing exceptional about Faraz’s lawn designs last year, which admittedly was a lackluster year for lawn. Sana Safinaz’ lawn was probably the most innovative last year, with interesting effects in terms of fabric and embroidery. The other contender was the wildly popular Elan lawn – last year’s designs were some of the best of the season.

Khadijah Shah also lost out in the high street Pret category. Generation beat her brand Sapphire to the prize in the biggest upset of the LSA’s fashion section. Sapphire was a game changer in 2015 with great designs and phenomenal sales. They had a huge impact on the industry and sent many larger companies back to the drawing board. Generation has really upped its game recently but their best work has been in this calendar year; 2015 was Sapphire’s year and I think they should have won.
