Tattoos aren’t nearly as taboo now as they were 50 years ago. People are getting face tattoos and you barely notice them. What is this ink sorcery, you ask? It’s microblading. Allow us to enlighten you on this craft.
Microblading is a cosmetic technique that involves taking a small blade, made of tiny needles, and drawing hair-like strokes on the eyebrow area. Pigment is deposited into the skin through these tiny needles, creating a realistic, semi-permanent eyebrow. With enough rigorous face washing and sun tanning, those fake brows will start to fade. It’s definitely, not immediate, though. Microbladed eyebrows can last for about two years depending on your skin type and how well you take care of them. But since skin regenerates about once a month, you’ll probably want to get a touch up on your brows, before they show signs of fading.
Slight fading visible
While it seems like this trend has stormed through the beauty community only recently, on the contrary, microblading has been big in Asia long before social media was even a thing.
But in the eternal search for the perfect brows, microblading has become a sought-after procedure because of its low maintenance and precision.
First, the microblading artist marks out your new eyebrows with a skin safe pen. This way you can get a preview of your face and discuss with your artist – your eyebrows do frame your face. Once you’re satisfied with the outline and ink colour, numbing cream will be applied. And then the microblading process starts and takes roughly around 1 – 2 hours, from start to finish.
“Microblading is a two-step process. Step one is the main treatment. Step two is touch up on faded pigment. The distance between both the steps is 4 to 15 weeks, depending on your skin type, which is initally assessed when clients send in a picture of their brows via WhatsApp or email. Both steps are crucial in the longevity of the result. Besides the treatment post care, skin type and skin care routine is also essential. During the process, many clients have described it to mimic the feeling of a pen being scratched over your skin. It’s after you’re done with the procedure that’s not a walk in the park,” advises Suraini Wong of Brow Works by Suraini Wong
Since there is puncturing of the dermis to inject pigment, the skin obviously produces scabs in order to heal the wound. You can’t under any circumstances get your new eyebrows wet for at 4 -5 days, depending on what is advised by your microblading artist – that means no face washing, no swimming, no heavy sweating. These are basically, new wounds with ink in them. It’s only when the scab heals completely and comes off on its own that the ink will be fully deposited into the skin.
The pigment will fade overtime and when you factor in touch-ups, microblading can get pretty costly. With Nadia Hussain Salon’s microblading services clocking in at PKR 25,000 initially and then around PKR 10 – 15,000 for touch-ups, depending on when you feel like you need them.
