Pakistani Bridal Wear – the best 6 collections from PFDC L’Oreal Bridal Week (PLBW) 2014

Pakistan Fashion Design Council’s Bridal Fashion Week sponsored by L’Oreal is one of the fashion highlights of the year. PLBW 2014 saw some exceptional bridal fashion but a handful of designers stood head and shoulders above the rest. Their collections were well conceived, creative, elaborately crafted and simply beautiful. Here are my personal favourites from PFDC’s bridal fashion week, in no particular order.

Nomi Ansari

Nomi Ansari’s is known for his skilled use of colour. His Gul collection was colourful, as expected, but also featured a notable level of variety and sophistication. With this collection Ansari dialed back the saturation of his colours for a palette that was vibrant yet refined.

Ansari’s floral inspiration was woven into the outfits in a myriad of ways. From embroidered floral motifs, to prints to 3-D flowers, the Gul collection was inventive and beautiful. It featured lenghas, saris, harem pants, jackets and attractive loose kurtas. The floral theme was complemented by a psychedelic print and the overall effect was strikingly memorable.

Fahad Hussayn

Fahad Hussayn loves to indulge his gothic side when it comes to styling his collections. However, once you move away from the trappings of fantasy, you realise that Hussayn is a master craftsman. From the incredible intricacy of his embroidery to the silhouettes he showed, Fahad Hussayn shone at PLBW. He is probably one of the most under-rated designers we have today.

Hussayn used prints, nets, velvets and fur in a range of cuts including saris, lenghas, jackets and gowns. His Thatta-doll inspired collection was notable for its level of detailing and impeccable finishing. With hues from the palest pastels to vivid reds and pinks, this collection has something for every bride.

Sana Safinaz

Sana Safinaz’s collection was an ode to contemporary ethnic chic. Using bold prints to line long, draped dupattas, Sana Safinaz used layering and draping to make a bold statement.

The earthy tones, draping and vivid ethnic prints were reminiscent of Sabyasachi Mukherjee, but the collection was pure Sana Safinaz. From the embroidery to the silhouettes, the outfits had that sophisticated Pakistani chic that is Sana Safinaz’s hallmark.

The collection focused on short loose shirts and cigarette pants but also featured lenghas, saris and evening gowns. This was a collection that could be mixed and matched, dressed up or down. There were full-fledged bridals but also plenty of elegant formal wear. A loose shift with harem pants and black worked top with a purple printed skirt stood out as chic modern alternatives to traditional wedding wear.

Sania Maskatiya

Sania Maskatiya has become so well known for her prints & pretwear that many people forget that she actually focused more on bridal and formalwear when she first started. She was one of the designers who sparked the revival in the use of kamdani and traditional embroidery. This year she dialled back her experimentalism on the bridalwear ramp and showed more of the sort of pieces that make her one of Karachi’s go-to designers for shaadi wear.

Whereas last year ramp collection was bravely different, this year Maskatiya struck the right balance between ramp drama and wearability. She included trendy combinations like high-waisted shararas, printed pants and a sari over a lengha paired with delicate floral motifs in net and silk. Her super-long dupattas were bang on trend. Her ensembles were fashion forward and creative yet stylish and attractive.

Misha Lakhani

Misha Lakhani is possibly the coolest bridal designer in Pakistan. Her unique blend of artisanal handwork and effortlessly stylish cuts has made her a firm favourite with fashion lovers. One of the pitfalls of formal wear is that it can be ageing – no so when you’re wearing Misha. With her, there’s no danger of looking like an aunty – no matter how elaborate your outfit.

Her Nowruz collection featured a breathtakingly elaborate white ensemble – all delicate tukri work, pearls and net. Other memorable outfits included opulent kaftans with a peekaboo back and sari lenghas. She used net and velvet to great effect and paired her trademark shimmery dupattas with relaxed silhouettes.

Misha is something of a trendsetter and shades of her work were visible in various other designers’ collections. She was certainly one of the first to pioneer the trend for separates in bridal wear. With many designers using a mixture of threadwork and shimmery embroidery on net, Misha’s work still managed to be unmistakable.

Shamaeel Ansari

Shamaeel Ansari started her show with an white and beige capsule collection and then moved on to a rich palette of deep reds, oranges and maroons. Her heavier outfits had a timeless quality while lighter formals had an appealing bohemian chic.

The first segment consisted of opulent formals in shades of white, off-white and pale gold. The stately silhouettes and sumptuous detailing of these pieces shone on the ramp. The remainder of the collection was nicely balanced between ornate ensembles and trendier outfits. Shamaeel’s ramp styling is always impeccable and her experience shone through in a collection that managed to be both dramatic and graceful.
