For a flawless and clean looking skin, hygiene plays the role of a building block that many people in our part of the world tend to ignore due to lack of awareness. Consultant dermatologist and cosmetologist Dr. Najjia Ashraf stresses on making hygiene a priority if someone wants a healthy skin.

“Unfortunately, most people in our society do not follow the basic rules of hygiene and then they complain about having skin issues; people need to realize that poor hygiene contributes to the development of many skin ailments, so it should not be ignored.” says Dr. Najjia. She added that basic hygiene habits like showering regularly and taking off your makeup before going to bed are necessary for a glowing and flawless complexion.

  1. Mineral makeup for that sun-kissed glow

Every season has its own effects on our skin and summer is no exception. Identifying your skin type is the first step towards having good skin and one should pick products based on that only. If you have oily or combination skin, go for matte-based products in sun blocks and foundations during summer. On the contrary, if you have dry skin, use light serum-based foundations and sun blocks. Makeup artist Raana Khan when asked about that one product everyone should stay away from during summer says: “I would recommend girls to stay away from lip gloss during summers because of its greasy consistency. I personally use less foundation in summers and I tend to go towards matte products such as lipsticks.”

Mineral makeup is an excellent choice for all skin types during summer because it is light weight, organic and does not clog pores. It contains minerals such as iron oxides, zinc oxide and titanium oxide that are also known to heal and improve the texture of the skin. “Identify your skin type and buy products that are meant for it. I would highly recommend the use of mineral makeup during summers as it does not clog pores and is aqua-based which is great for the skin,” says dermatologist/cosmetologist Dr. Najjia.

  1. Say yes to Primers

There’s a reason beauty experts can’t stop raving about these. Primers are a must-have during summers because of their exceptional quality of combating shine and creating a smooth base for your makeup, be it foundations, eye makeup or even tinted moisturizers/sun blocks. Primers are essential for your makeup routine especially during summers because they help the makeup stay on for longer and also allows effective application. Dr. Najjia stresses on including a primer to our makeup routine by saying: “Primers are essential when it comes to summer makeup because they give your makeup more staying power. Pick one that suits your skin type for best results.”

  1. Freshen up with Face Mists

High humidity levels during summers call for touch-ups every few hours in a day to keep your makeup looking fresh. If you face this issue then your best bet is investing in a good face mist that hydrates and moisturizes your skin. Award-winning international makeup artist Lisa Eldridge swears by this product and recommends ones containing rose water, coconut oil and zinc sulphate – all ingredients that hydrate and mattify the skin in summers. You can also use rose water two to three times in a day to hydrate your skin and to keep it supple.

5. All Hail the ‘Charcoal’

Living in a city where summer lasts more than its fair share, we all need something that can help us peel that extra layer of dirt and greasiness from our faces. Charcoal is an ingredient that is known to have detoxifying effects on the skin, especially for oily and spot-prone skin. Make-up artist Lisa Eldridge recommends products with charcoal extracts in them to purify the pores such as Dermalogica’s Charcoal Rescue Mask that includes witch hazel and lactic acid – the perfect combination for smooth and clean skin.
