Always a classic, black and white is suddenly uber-trendy thanks to some of Karachi’s top young designers. Summer formals and wedding wear tends to veer towards pastels or tones of gold, silver and white but this year we’re seeing some gorgeous monochrome versions on our timeline.
Several top designers release formal collections early in the year for the summer wedding season. Their collections tend to set the tone for the coming season and there have been some fabulous ones this year. Misha Lakhani’s Vadi e Lale collection, which just got an update, Nida Azwer’s Katas Raj and Sania Maskatiya’s Maneli collections are all full of delicious formals. This year, all three are clearly thinking in black and white.
There’s something so striking about white embroidery on black and each designer has approached it in their own inimitable style. Nida Azwer’s has done a whole selection of monochrome outfits using heritage craft embroidery techniques and 3D embellishment.
Misha has produced one of her signature kaftans in black and white and has also used heritage embroidery techniques on a black kurta paired with a crushed white lengha. Sania Maskatiya has taken the classical idea of white on black gara embroidery and applied it to a modern, long straight kurta which she’s paired with a voluminous net dupatta.
Watch out for more monochrome formals as the year progresses – we’re sure there’s going to more of this trend coming up soon as more designers bring out their own contemporary takes on this classic combo.
