Saturday Swing Night
Swing Dance originate in the 1930s taking on different forms: Collegiate Shag, Lindy Hop, Charleston, and Balboa. Today, Lindy Hop is the most popular one left. While fast Lindy Hop is an upbeat and a true test of trust and stamina, the swing dance basic is fun, light-hearted, and quite entertaining. The basic steps (rock step, triple step, and more) will be taught in the first half of the night. The remainder will see music playing and the group swing dancing with each other. But let’s not hog a partner, dance with each other into merriment, and start the first swing scene in Karachi!!

The Patriarchal Bargain
Kya aurat aurat ki dushman hai?
Confusion about why women often act against the interests of other women, despite feminist assumption of a universal sisterhood, can be clarified by unpacking an often overlooked, but important concept in feminist theory called patriarchal bargain. Come join us to discuss the concept of Patriarchal Bargain which helps us understand why people tend to think that “women are women’s worst enemies.”
Grounded on Turkish feminist economist Deniz Kandiyoti’s theory on Patriarchal Bargain or Negotiating with Patriarchy where she examines two systems of male dominance under patriarchy, one a modified form of classic patriarchy from Sub-Saharan Africa and the other she terms classic patriarchy from Middle-East, South and East Asia.

A rapturous evening of music and poetry featuring Sufi Kalaam performed by Ali Shahbaz, Poetry Recitation by Neel Ahmed and Classical Sitar recital by Ritika Dhanja.
Ali Shahbaz is a ghazal and sufi singer who acquired fame as the 1st runner-up of the 2018 Nesfruta Funkaar campaign.
Ritika Dhanja, who was also a part of Nesfruta Funkaar, is Pakistan’s first female sitar player to have gained major acclamation.
Neel Ahmed is an acclaimed contemporary poetess from the younger literary circles of Pakistan. She is actively involved in promoting Urdu poetry amongst the youth and her works have been acknowledged by writers such as Aslam Chishti and Jagdish Prakash.

We present to you Thinking Films, a series of film screenings curated to explore storytelling in world cinema. Our selection is not fixated on any one genre or language. Blockbusters, classics, arthouse, experimental and foreign films will all have their day! The films will be introduced by filmmaker, writer (and unabashed geek) Sabeeh Ahmad, and each screening will be followed by an open discussion about the work and its craft.

After 6 years and many hundreds of shows later, we, the LOLWaalay will depart from our signature short-form style and bring you some never before seen improvised, experimental long-form! Also, in addition to our act, we will feature some of our funny friends as well!
If you were to tie the knot with long-form improv via arranged marriage, here is how a rishta aunty would describe it:
‘Long-form improvisation is an unscripted performance of anywhere between 20-90 minutes based off a single audience suggestion. Common elements include monologues, games and series of inter-connected scenes. Long form is much closer to theatre than short form. The final product often appears to be an improvised play. According to a popular improv director, long form is to jazz as short form is to pop’.
