A Journey towards the Nation’s Heartbeat by Mobeen Ansari
Mobeen Ansari is a photographer, filmmaker & sculptor based in Islamabad, Pakistan. After attaining his bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from National College of Arts, he started working as a photographer, telling stories of Pakistan and its people through his photos, and movies.
He has published two photography books. The first one is called ‘Dharkan: The Heartbeat of a Nation’ which features portraits and stories of iconic people of Pakistan from all walks of life, including personalities like the late Abdul Sattar Edhi, Abida Parveen, Sheema Kermani, Wasim Akram and many others.
Recently Dharkan was re-published in form of its second edition, after a hiatus of 4 years. In this session, Mobeen will talk about the making of the book and experiences of photographing the people starred in the book. He will also talk about how stories of these icons changed and evolved over time, which he has added to the second edition. His second book, called ‘White in the Flag’, is based on lives and festivities of religious minorities of Pakistan.
Mobeen has exhibited in Pakistan and around the world, namely in China, Italy, Iraq, and across the United States. Other than being the author of the above mentioned books, Mobeen has also produced two silent movies. ‘Hellhole’ is a black and white short film, based on the life of a sanitation worker (generally known as gutter cleaners) in Karachi, and ‘Lady of Emerald Scarf’, also a short film, which follows a day in the life of Aziza, a carpet maker and shepherd in Gulmit, a village in Northern Pakistan.

Dystopian Storytelling: Fighting Fear with Fiction
Join us at T2F for the screening of ‘Shehr e Tabassum’ on Friday, 14th February 2020 at 7pm at the Faraar Gallery, T2F.
The film’s central question – how much are we willing to sacrifice for the sake of progress and peace – requires serious, honest reflection. But this conversation also runs the risk of being hijacked by internalised biases. This is where dystopian art offers a solution: the staging of a very personal dilemma in an unfamiliar world, a careful balance of distance and familiarity. The panel discussion on Shehr e Tabassum would explore how art can create spaces to have difficult conversations without alienating audiences; of the potentialities of being radical while also maintaining an appeal for mainstream consumption. It would explore the many narrative and visual choices that the short film made to be able to carry out a meaningful critique of powerful institutions.
Arafat Mazhar is the writer and director of Shehr e Tabassum. He is also the founder of Puffball Studios, the production house that made Shehr e Tabassum.
Haseeb Rehman is the Lead Animator for Shehr e Tabassum.
Rasti Fraooq is the co-producer and co-writer for Shehr e Tabassum. She also voiced multiple characters in the film.
Puffball Studio is an interdisciplinary team of Pakistani artists, designers, writers, musicians, illustrators, actors and content creators who specialize in storytelling, music, animation and meaningful design.

Uzma Aslam Khan’s The Miraculous True History of Nomi Ali
Novelist Uzma Aslam Khan will present her newest book, The Miraculous True History of Nomi Ali, a work of historical fiction that took her over twenty-six years to complete. Set in the British penal colony of the Andaman Islands (“Kala Pani”) during the freedom movement and the Second World War, when the islands were occupied by the Japanese, Nomi Ali is not merely about lives that are accidentally overlooked or forgotten. It is about lives that are deliberately deleted from historical “truth”—lives from present-day Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar (then Burma), as well as indigenous islanders, all caught in the crossfires of a double occupation of pre-Partition India. They are lives that historically privileged perspectives have deemed unworthy of remembrance, but that, through this fictional retelling, have powers of their own: of empathy and fury, imagination and love.
Khan will speak on her defiance of traditionally accepted histories, her research, and ultimately, her rejection of the “facts” she meticulously collected, in favor of a fiction that feels true. She will also speak on the book’s resonance with today, in the context of mass deportations, hate politics, and heightened fear of the “other.”
The event includes a reading, Q & A, and book signing. All proceeds benefit T2F.
