Aurat Jalsa

As violence and sexual, physical and emotional harassment increase at an alarming rate, we see voices of survivors – women, persons from marginalised gender minorities, and the working class – being shunned and them facing backlash, abuse and harassment as they report their perpetrator(s).

In recent times, we have also seen the defamation law and other state tools such as PECA laws being used as a weapon to silence survivors who are reporting rape, violence, harassment or assault.

On 20th December, women and marginalized realities will come together in an Aurat Jalsa to discuss the ongoing backlash against victims and survivors, their experiences and what we can do about it.

Join us for half a day of discussions and theatre.

20th December at Arts Council. Be there!

Hippo Hockey Winter Camp!

Hippo Hockey winter camp inspires children aged 2 to 5+ years to have FUN, get active and learn to play hockey. It works by combining Music, Pictures and Hippo Characters into a totally interactive learning adventure that children love.

Why to choose Hippo Hockey winter camp for your child?

Hippo Hockey Winter Camp is a well-balanced five day program for kids aging between 2 to 5, with a lot of music & movements, body workouts, happy stories & lots of Hockey!

Field hockey is a complete body workout & for children aging between 2 to 6 it can turn out be a lot more than just that. Hippo Hockey using VAK (Visual, Auditory & Kinesthetics) approach covers and help the little ones in the following areas:

Music & Movement
Music & Movement engages the brain. Children learn new things, like sounds, words and patterns through music. And with dance, they can explore and control their body movements. These activities are great for development and stimulate connections in the growing brain.

Endurance
Hockey is a high-intensity sport that has many cardiovascular benefits. Between bouts of running, skating, and bouts of rests, kids are participating in interval training without even realizing it. High-intensity interval training has been known to boost aerobic capacity, energy levels, and metabolism.

Strength
In a sport where coordination is essential, kids have to put their leg and core muscle to use. Building power in these large muscle groups will also strengthen their postural muscles & gross motor skills. Postural muscles are important in children’s attention and participation in school. Natural muscle strengthening that comes from playing a sport (as opposed to weight-lifting) is highly beneficial in children. Improved muscle strength ensures optimal bone growth and prevents injury.

Balance
Children as young as 2 years old can balance on one leg briefly. Their stability on their feet is often a reflection of how well they can recruit their core, glutes, and stabilizing muscles. The skills required to play hockey, such as balancing on while passing the ball or dribbling it, provide children opportunities to work on their balance reactions. Working on balance strategies in the ankles and hips will also help children become more aware of their bodies and improve their proprioception (the sense of where their joint positions are in space).

Coordination
Learning any new motor skill and training for any sport requires our proprioceptive sense. This sense allows us to move our limbs correctly in space in response to an oncoming opponent without looking at them directly. As with most sports, hockey requires upper body coordination and hand-eye coordination. In order to successfully pass or score, players have to grade their muscle forces and determine how to coordinate their limbs with every move.

Agility
In high-intensity sports where athletes have to think fast on their feet and respond quickly to plays, they are not just working on their physical skills but mental acuity as well. Hippo Hockey enhances children’s agility due to the swiftness provided by the skates and the constant quick changes in direction needed to receive ball or dodge other players.

Social Skills
This fast-paced sport trains concentration and ability to make precise decisions. It will also give your child a sense of pride. As with any team sport, hippo hockey prepares a child for social interactions necessary for school and work. Success in a team environment will build trust, sportsmanship, responsibility, and openness to change. Participation will help a child understand how to deal with winning and losing, which is applicable throughout life.

Dates: 23rd – 27th December

Ethical Journalism in Pakistan

Journalism in Pakistan is a realm that connects with everyone’s intellect but is barely understood by the audience at large. Ethics in Pakistani journalism continues to dwell in an unquestioned grey area, reason being that is considered to be a major form of entertainment. It is very important to compare and contrast how Pakistani media is evolving as compared to leading journalistic forums around the globe. For the most part, journalism around the work encourages:

– Dual opinions
– Critical thinking
– Certain code of conduct

This talk will discuss multiple case studies that will highlight:
– What are the Ethical responsibilities of Pakistani media?
– Where do we fall short in meeting the criteria of an ethically responsible media
– What progress has been made with time and how can we further improve ourselves?
