What’s on in Karachi 1st March – 7th March 2019

Time to get your spring wardrobe all set! There’s a sprinkling of exhibitions this week. Zuri by Zainab Fawad is a must-visit for breezy, chic spring clothes. Sara Raza and Jewelicious’ combined exhibitions are bound to have some head-turners for your wardrobe. The Karachi Literature Festival is also this weekend, at the Beach Luxury Hotel. With book launches, panel discussions, film screenings and even a puppet travelogue, there is loads to see and do. UAE’s Urdu community theatre group Goonj Productions will perform its critically-acclaimed play ‘Mian Biwi Aur Wagah’ while Rani’s screening at the Literature Festival is also worth a watch as it highlights the transgender stigma in our society. Shah Sharabeel’s acclaimed play Twins Apart continues at the Arts Council.  T2F is also on a roll this week, starting off March on a very artistic note with Mandala Art – wonderful as therapy, Funny Fortnites with LOLWaalay – laughter is a great way to digest first world problems. Self defense classes don’t mean walking out of class with a bloody face or a broken nose. Take up Taichi lessons at T2F to learn a new skill that you may have to put to use in a city like our’s. Elan Bazar will also be a beneficial visit to pick up unique, mostly hand-crafted numbers. A lot of artistic ventures to embark this week…

Art Mandala with Mahin Hassan

In this workshop we will be simply starting with circles and will be filling them with different patterns, colours and symbols using different surfaces like canvas, ceramic plates, boards, paper etc. The process of drawing and filling in a Mandala is very calming. At the same time, another combat is being played out, or played out again —that of the presidential election. As in other African countries recently, there is hope for a democratic transition this time: it is possible that Ali Bongo, the outgoing president and son of Omar Bongo, president from 1967 until his death, may not be re-elected for a second term.

Chi Gong (Chi Kung) is a holistic system of coordinated body movement, breath, stretching and meditation used for Preventive Medicine, Self-Healing and Self-Cultivation. ‘Chi’ refers to the ‘Life Energy’ and ‘Gung’ or ‘Kung’ means ‘Cultivation’.

In this workshop, you will learn:
Marshal Arts

Taichi can equally be used as an effective fighting style, though the primary purpose of Taichi and Chi Gong is self-cultivation and awareness in every aspect of one’s life. As such it is as beneficial for small children as it is for elderly people. The benefits of Taichi and Chi Gong have proved to reverse the effects of most physical and mental ailments in the human body, and its practice is encouraged around the world as a highly effective form of alternate and preventive medicine. Funny Fortnites with LOLWaalay

After 6 years and many hundreds of shows later, we, the LOLWaalay will depart from our signature short-form style and bring you some never before seen improvised, experimental long-form! Also, in addition to our act, we will feature some of our funny friends as well!
If you were to tie the knot with long-form improv via arranged marriage, here is how a rishta aunty would describe it:
‘Long-form improvisation is an unscripted performance of anywhere between 20-90 minutes based off a single audience suggestion. Common elements include monologues, games and series of inter-connected scenes. Long form is much closer to theatre than short form. The final product often appears to be an improvised play. According to a popular improv director, long form is to jazz as short form is to pop’.
What an insightful and eloquent rishta aunty.
