Philosophy Circle: Awami Falsafa; Who Deserves What & Why?
Should a school teacher be paid more than an FMCG brand manager?
We often say that education is the most fundamental need of our generation, and yet, the majority of job opportunities for teachers hardly offer enough of a financial incentive. Contrasting this with the earnings of a brand manager of a particular shampoo brand at a multinational firm, you might say that nice smelling shampoos aren’t the most important concern of our society and yet the monetary value of the brand manager might be five times more than that of a school teacher. Is there anything unfair about this?
This week we focus on two important questions of political philosophy;
1. How do we put a fair value to someone’s contribution to society?
2. Do we need any redistribution of wealth in society and if so, on what principles?
In answering these hard questions, we look into the works of a contemporary philosopher, John Rawls, from his book ‘A Theory of Justice’. Rawls is undoubtedly one of the most influential political philosopher of the 20th century and gives a very interestingly unconventional response to the question above.
Join us here at T2F on 22nd November to discover unique perspectives of contemporary philosophers on the question of fair values and distribution of wealth.
