Should schools give a preference in admission to applicants from low socioeconomic backgrounds?
In the field of ‘distributive justice’ in public philosophy we ask a very essential question which has crossed the minds of almost all of us in various phases of life: who deserves what and why?
This talk offers a philosophically charged analytical approach towards the distribution of admission rights to applicants coming from different socio-economic backgrounds. The three key philosophical approaches taken for this talk would be of:
Bentham: For him, the best action would be one that maximizes total utility. It didn’t matter how those outcomes are achieved, so long as they were achieved. His view though often criticized by many for being too ‘narrow minded,’ does offer us to have a standard yardstick of measure and be objective in our comparisons.
Kant: For him, even though great outcomes could be achieved, those outcomes would be insignificant if they involved the violation of these ‘rights.’ Most of our contemporary discussion on human rights stems from Kant’s work.
Aristotle: He had a ‘teleological’ approach towards distributive justice where moral desert was established by the ‘telos’ or ‘the purpose’ of the good being distributed. Understanding the purpose of the good and bringing that into discussion will help us in both; shaping our objectives and establishing underlying rights.
