Sur Ka Safar: featuring Turab Ali at T2F

Join us at Faraar Gallery, T2F, for the latest performance in our Sur Ka Safar series, featuring Turab Ali, accompanied by Yousuf Kerai on the tabla.

About the Performer
Turab Ali descends from three generations of sitar players of the Dehli Gharana. He has been trained by his grandfather, the late Ustad Imdad Hussain Khan, and his maternal uncle, Ikhlaq Hussain Khan. Turab gave his first public performance at age 13, in Karachi, and has been performing ever since, including in India and the Middle East. He has performed in festivals and concerts arranged by All Pakistan Music Conference, Tehzeeb Foundation, Lahore Music Forum, British Council, and Sampurna. He has recorded for film and TV drama scores with famous music directors of Pakistan. Turab plays in the Gayaki Ang (or vocal manner of playing). It is perhaps the most difficult form of playing the sitar as it involves the systematic use of a pitch deflecting technique by pulling the strings across the frets and varying their tension. Turab has received the Husn-e-Kamal award for his performances in Pakistan.

Explore your Core- with Bisha

Join Bisha for a Yoga workshop at Studio X on the 31st of March in Karachi!

In this 3-hour workshop, we will target three objectives:
1. To identify the components of what makes up the “Core” of your body
2. How to awaken and strengthen those parts
3. How to link the strength training work to Yoga Asana (poses).

Be prepared to work through a strong, embodied practice and explore arm balances from the Bakasana (Crow) family! You will leave with the tools and understanding of how to appropriately use your Core container, not just in a physical practice, but in day-to-day movements.

For Bisha, the practice and teaching of Yoga has been one of the greatest pleasures she has come across. She is in the midst of exploring movement of the physical body beyond traditional asana alone and integrates them in her Vinyasa Flow classes. With over 800 hours of training and 6 years of teaching experience, her aim is to break down the mechanics of yoga postures and theories in order to make them accessible to everyone who wants to bring Yoga (and more!) into their lives. Each class encourages students to develop equanimity and fortitude in both complex and simple poses, and to enjoy the path of progression.

Date: March 31, 2018
Time: 3:00pm-6:00pm
Price: 8,000/-
open to ALL LEVELS | MIXED (please note, beginners must have at least two months of practice)

Salt Shaker 14: Khumariyaan

At Salt Arts we believe Karachi is the hub of live music – as well as the centre of cosmopolitan and intersectional arts audiences in Pakistan. As Karachi inspires our voice in Southasia – we explore its past and plan it’s now. Our inherited nostalgia from generations before have led to our new series of curated acts and the historical Beach Luxury Hotel as our collaborators and strategic partner.

Built in 1947 as a 100 room hotel, the BLH boasts a rich history of live music during Karachi’s golden age. Now in 2018, we revisit what that old love Karachi was and what it can be. A break from the noise, a celebration of our urban heritage featuring contemporary artists and genres.

Join us this season for a series of curated audio visual showcases. Opening with musical act Khumariyaan. Khumar means intoxication. This band of musicians hailing from Peshawar formed its artistic identity in response to the hardships faced by the youth of the country, in the face of conservatism, politics and censorship.
