Aaj Ke Naam
An Evening to Celebrate the Life and Works of Faiz Ahmed Faiz
Faiz Ahmad Faiz
(13 February 1911 – 20 November 1984)
He was a brilliant Pakistani leftist poet and author, and one of the most celebrated writers of the Urdu language.
Faiz went on to study at Government College and Oriental College. He went on to serve in the British Indian Army and was awarded in the British Empire Medal. Faiz was a leading member of the Indian Communist Party and one of the architects of the Communist movement in Pakistan.
After Pakistan’s independence, Faiz became the editor to The Pakistan Times. He was charged by the Pakistani regime in the Rawalpindi Conspiracy Case in 1951, was sentenced to death and spent four years in prison before being released. He went on to become a notable member of the Progressive Writers’ Movement.
Faiz served on the National Council of the Arts by Bhutto’s government; when Bhutto was overthrown by the Zia dictatorship, he exiled himself and went to Lebanon, where he remained till 1982. Between then and 1984 he spent days in the UK as well as returning to Pakistan, where he died in 1984.
In Faiz’s voice, it is as if we can hear the voices of today – Pakistan’s and the sub-continent’s pain, its yearnings for democracy, the cries of its “orphan blood” shed by a spotless assassin, and its conviction of hope. Faiz was an avowed Marxist, and he received the Lenin Peace Prize by the Soviet Union in 1962. His literary work was posthumously publicly honoured when the Pakistan Government conferred upon him the nation’s highest civil award, Nishan-e-Imtiaz, in 1990. Among other accolades, Faiz was nominated for Nobel Prize in Literature.

Growing Pains: A Performance by Fareeha Shah
In our impatience to best the perils of adulthood, it is easy to forget the trauma of adolescence. “Growing Pains” will help us remember. It is an exploration of early life through a close reading of journals, diaries, and other writings. The show will comprise of both, a performance and a curated display of documents and artwork.
The first half will consist of a personal reflection by Fareeha Shah. The performance will be a mediation on shame and the self and will address themes including social exclusion, expectations, and a yearning for validation. The audience will then be able to engage with the work displayed in the gallery. Prints and other keepsakes from the show, designed in collaboration with visual artist Muhammad Alimumal, will also be available for sale.
Adolescence is a time fraught with trial, misery, and very complex emotions. Left behind in the hazy recollections of our pasts, it is easy to forget this. “Growing Pains” invites the audience to peruse memories that they may have trouble confronting by presenting deeply personal, sometimes painful, work.
Performer’s note: It is important to have this event during my final days in Karachi, before I leave for university, when I am at the cusp of starting a new life. Having the show at this critical juncture will enable deep purging, catharsis, and a metamorphosis. Being able to let go of a significant amount of compounding suffering will allow me to part ways with the city at peace with it.
