The SZABIST Performing Arts Society invites you to MANZAR: An Exhibition of Perspective, an initiative taken for the first time to bring together Pakistani’s from all around and put their perspective on display so that it is seen, heard and understood.

Our aim is to put on display the work of some of Pakistan’s photographers and artists who’s work has either been overlooked or not given the importance it deserves. Our aim is to give these photographers and artists a platform to put their work on display so that people from all over get a chance to understand what is meant to be understood.

Along with displaying perspectives, we also want to challenge perspectives that need to be changed. We want to highlight perspectives that need to be heard again so that they are understood better. For this reason, Manzar will also include panel discussions with Kami Sid and fellow trans activists, along with another and seperate panel discussion with the athletes that are part of Special Olympics Pakistan.

The exhibition will take place on the 28th of April 2018, at SZABIST 154 Campus, from 3 PM to 9 PM and will be open for everyone in Karachi to attend and even purchase the pictures that are put on display. For ticket bookings, please fill out the following google form

Science Ka Adda: Evolution by Saad Shafqat

Charles Darwin who died in April 1882 was a naturalist and biologist known for his theory of evolution and the process of natural selection. Join us on Saturday, April 28 at 7pm to participate in the latest series of Science ka Adda: Evolution, a talk by Saad Shafqat where he explores the theories suggested by Darwin. Irrefutable scientific evidence establishes biological evolution through natural selection, first comprehensively articulated by Charles Darwin in 1859, as the best explanation for the diversity of life on Earth. This talk will present the ideas of evolution in a manner accessible to non-experts.

About the speaker
Saad Shafqat is professor of neurology at Aga Khan University. He holds a PhD in neurobiology from Duke and specialised as a neurologist from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. An academic author as well as a published creative writer, Saad has several scientific papers as well as his two books to his credit. His upcoming novel “Tightrope”, a hospital drama set in Karachi with echoes of #metoo, will be published by Bloomsbury later this year.

About Science Ka Adda:
Science Ka Adda is a platform for debate and discussion about science and how it impacts our lives. Conducted by specialists from various different backgrounds and disciplines, Science Ka Adda has addressed topics that range from ‘The Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence’ to ‘Tools for Disease Eradication’.

People’s Poetry as People’s History: The Role of Habib Jalib

Join us as we pay tribute to the renowned revolutionary poet Habib Jalib on 29th April at Faraar Gallery, T2F.
The talk focuses on the long career and role of the Pakistani revolutionary resistance poet Habib Jalib (1928-1993) as people’s historian by virtue of the fact that Jalib’s revolutionary resistance poetry covers the entire postcolonial epoch in Pakistan from the 1950s right until the restoration of democracy in the country in the 1990s, post-Zia-ul-Haq. One can retell the entire – hitherto marginalized – people’s history of Pakistan merely by reading Jalib’s poems sequentially and understanding not only the context in which they were written but also the struggles that they represented. For example, the meaning of the struggle for Pakistan and the debates over character of the new state, whether religious or secular in the early 1950s; the democratic struggles against Pakistan’s first military dictatorship of Ayub Khan in the 1960s; the struggle of East Pakistanis, which would later culminate in the independence of Bangladesh in the 1960s; the Zulfikar Ali Bhutto years as well as the struggle for Baloch people’s rights, both in the 1970s; the dictatorship of the Zia years and the pro-democracy movement against his regime in the 1980s; and the return of democracy under Benazir Bhutto’s first government in the 1990s. Interestingly though Jalib’s poetry is unique in this respect, he and his poetry was, and continues to be denounced, dismissed or ignored as ‘agitational poetry’, thus not worthy of poetic merit by critics and elite poets from both the left and right. The talk will be based on original translations from the Urdu of some of Jalib’s eminent poems as well as largely unknown or ignored poems to retell the people’s history of Pakistan and focus on people’s poetry as people’s history; and as tribute for the oppressed and narratives of the marginalized on the occasion of Jalib’s 90th birth anniversary (2018), and for truth in dangerous and bad times.

Time: 06:00 PM – 08:00 PM
Place: Faraar Gallery, The Second Floor (T2F)
