Dream Catching Workshop

The much awaited Dream Catching workshop is here!

In the first part we will be learning about Chakras: the seven centres of spiritual power in the human body.
Chakras are like a roadmap or guidebook to yourself and how you’re showing up in the world, giving you the insight into patterns that you are creating in your life.

•Having trouble speaking your thoughts? You probably have Throat Chakra issues to work through.
•Are feelings of anger and resentment harbouring inside? Might mean you need to open up that Heart Chakra
•Troublesome relationships? There’s probably a Sacral Chakra issue you’re avoiding.
•Feeling down about yourself? Then more than likely it’s a Solar Plexus Chakra issue you need to focus on.

In this part of the workshop we will be learning about the Chakras in detail to figure out how we can balance our physical, emotional and spiritual selves through discussion, a yoga flow and a guided meditation.

The second part of the workshop allows us to bask in the afterglow of the first half by mindfully creating a Dreamcatcher.

Dream catchers are one of the most fascinating traditions of Native Americans. The traditional dream catcher was intended to protect the sleeping individual from negative dreams, while letting positive dreams through. The positive dreams would slip through the hole in the center of the dream catcher, and glide down the feathers to the sleeping person below. The negative dreams would get caught up in the web, and expire when the first rays of the sun struck them.
While weaving, we will discuss and honour the legends and tradition of this craft, as well as the spiritual significance. The workshop will close by smudging the dream catchers and giving thanks.
All supplies to make the dream catchers will be provided for during the workshop. The participants may also wish to bring any personal treasures, beads, trinkets, etc. that they may wish to incorporate into their dream catcher or share with others.

Book Launch – ‘Living Globalized’

Living Globalized is a tale of two young professionals, who met each other volunteering for respective countries at a professional organization called IEEE. The book starts from an elevator scene, continuing to narrate how both of them individually grew on a personal and professional level before meeting in that elevator. The book in the later part pivot to “after the elevator” in the second half, where it describes the amazing opportunities both have received and lessons they have learnt from global work, travels, and volunteerism. The point? We live in a globalized economy, and for the first time have digital tools to connect with anyone around the globe at any time. The book focuses on the fact that with a little hard work, anyone can leverage the opportunities made possible by our modern tools to actually travel, gain perspective, and make an impact at the global level. Their idea – and roadmap for readers’ personal transformations – is outlined in the book, Living Globalized, which features their experience along with twenty-two others from ten different nations in a short story format.

The author Sarang will be sharing some of his personal anecdotes and experiences from the book, moreover, he will be onsite to sign book copies for purchase on the event.

Write-in Sessions with DWL at the Library!

REGISTER HERE: https://bit.ly/2EBPmey

Writing can be a lonely task. Sometimes you need a tribe to help you set goals and deadlines, to share your successes and mistakes — to stay motivated. These sessions will give you a quiet and supportive environment to write in the company of others. Novelists, poets, bloggers and scriptwriters are all welcome.

Join Desi Writers’ Lounge at the British Council library in Karachi for our bi-monthly Write-in Sessions.

The write-in sessions are for new and experienced writers and aim to develop a strong writing community offline. Writers must bring their own laptop or notebook, whichever medium they are comfortable with, and write with fellow writers.

There is no requirement of sharing work with others but you are welcome to discuss your writing if you feel you need help or direction. This is an opportunity to share knowledge and passion for stories and writing, and to find inspiration with fellow writers.

About Desi Writers’ Lounge:
Desi Writers’ Lounge (DWL) is an online collective for South Asian writers and a plat-form for writing on South Asia that is powered entirely by volunteers. With ten years of dedicated effort and groundbreaking initiatives under its belt, today DWL runs online forums for peer review, a literary magazine called Papercuts, an international short story competition, a poetry competition, a global network of book clubs, and an education and training programme for writers and readers.

The US Senate Intelligence Committee’s report on the CIA’s torture methods in American prison camps (Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib, Bagram etc.), published in the year 2014, shook the world with its horrific and inhumane descriptions of torture at these camps. One of the most bizarre things that the report revealed was that music was used as a means of torture at these camps. Prisoners were made to listen to American pop songs (there was a proper playlist that was used at all prison camps) played on a loop and at extremely high volume. A lot of prisoners said that this was the worst form of torture they went through.

THE PLAYLIST is a musical production that is part investigation and part meditation on this abuse of music and human body and soul.
