It’s NOT okay! Unpacking Sexual Harassment at the Workplace

Girls at Dhabas in collaboration with Qaaf Se Qanoon present – It’s Not Okay: The legal and social implications of sexual harassment at the work place.

Do you know what Pakistan’s law states regarding sexual harassment in the work place? What are your rights, and what resources should your employer provide in effectively dealing with cases of sexual harassment at work? What happens after a case is filed? Most importantly, what even constitutes sexual harassment in legal terms?

Qaaf Se Qanoon will conduct a session unpacking the legal ins and outs of sexual harassment at the workplace. In addition, Dr. Navin G. Haider will share her own experience of fighting a two year long legal battle of sexual harassment against Karachi University Professor Sahar Ansari. Though the verdict earlier this year found Ansari guilty of the charges, Dr. Haider endured many challenges and obstacles on her path to justice. We will listen to her story first hand.

Join us as we attempt to better understand the legal ramifications through the case of one survivor’s navigation of its limitations. Knowledge is, after all, power!

Urbanities – art and public space in Pakistan: Book Launch

Urbanities – art and public space in Pakistan: a book launch and conversation on community engagement and public art

The yearlong project “Urbanities – art and public space in Pakistan,” for which the Goethe-Institut Pakistan collaborated with LBF, Vasl Artists’ Association , Marvi Mazhar & Associates, and other partners in 2016, was realized as a critical exploration of the urban and its possibilities by way of individual artistic work and research approaches. A lively exchange of discourse and practice between Germany and Pakistan aimed to enable a broad audience to engage with contemporary art. All three leading artistic positions found themselves tackling questions of community engagement and collective experience which still have an impact until today.

The newly printed publication both documents, evaluates, and advances the initial positions. The conversation will reference the project, present the publication, and continue the exchange with old and new guests and partners.

THIS WEEK: MAY FOOLS (1990)

An eccentric French family meets in the country for the funeral of their matriarch, which takes place at the same time as the 1968 student revolts in Paris. Even with the latest updates of the riots coming in over the airwaves, the family prefers to focus on petty squabbles and personal matters rather than the current political climate. When the escalating protests leave them no choice but to venture deeper into the wilderness, they become even more removed from social affairs.

Science Ka Adda: Let’s Talk Stress with Dr. Shehnaz Tapal

Did you know that stress is one of the main contributors to weight gain; or that about 80-85% of human illnesses and diseases are partly attributed to stress; or that when we’re stressed, we seem to forget things? No matter how old we are, stress affects us in many different ways.

Join us and Dr. Shehnaz Tapal in an interactive two-hour session at Faraar Gallery, T2F, where we will identify triggers and manifestations of stress, and learn coping strategies to better manage stress in our lives.

About the Speaker
Dr. Shehnaz Tapal, Ed. D, is an education consultant and a teacher of Viniyoga, with over twenty years’ experience of working in the education sector. She is trained in mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindfulness in schools in the US and UK, and has created a series of workshops to help people from all walks of life to manage their stress. Dr. Tapal’s motto, “A calm mind, a relaxed body, and an open heart lead to learning,” guides her teaching in Karachi, where she runs courses that integrate mindfulness and yoga for self-care and overall well-being.
