Whats on this week in Karachi: Events and Exhibitions 26th Jan – 1st Feb

As we finally recover from the food coma post KEF, we can get back to doing normal things! So this week, there are lots of events on which feed the soul rather than expanding waistlines. Green Lounge debuts its collection of artistic and indoor planters for a greener home and Insam has some great winter favourites pieces from its Winter Collection 2017.  For the little ones, some enthusiastic moms have put together a  ‘pop-up theatre’, encouraging kids to develop reading skills through drama, music and dance. There is also an awesome line up of musical entertainment, first there is the Jashn-e-Khusru Qawwali Night, then 3rd anniversary of the Sounds of Kolachi celebrated with the launch of their first album ‘Elhaam’, followed by the Rotary Club’s Rahat Fateh Ali Live in Concert. For a more chilled out evening there is the Friday night jam session with the emerging stars from Nescafe Basement and an epic Comedy Show featuring a great line-up of stand up comedians. Also for the first time ever, the Dawood Public School (DPS) takes the initiative by hosting ‘The Festival of Lights’, which is a global tradition of celebrating a nation’s hopefulness and prosperity through the display of colorful lights and innovation.

Sookhay Saavan

Zamiruddin Ahmed’s (1928-1990) nuanced works are distinct for their unassuming and direct narrative style. Mostly woven around the Muslim culture in India, his compelling works draw upon themes of social relationships, deception, loss of innocence, domestic estrangement and the suppressed sexuality of middle class women. The title of this performance borrows its name from the author’s short story Sookhay Saavun, which is considered a masterpiece of Urdu Literature. Women are central to the narratives in both the selected stories Qissa Musammaat Phool Vati Ka and Tishna e Faryaad. Mercilessly manipulated by the male protagonists, the women choose their own fate through despair and dejection, claiming autonomy over their individual destinies.
